WARDOGS Helicopter Controls & Pilot Guide

WARDOGS helicopter controls explained: the split climb/tilt scheme, mouse vs arrow keys, sensitivity settings, hover practice and anti-crash pilot tips.

Last updated

Most WARDOGS helicopter crashes are not talent problems — they are control-scheme problems, and MetaForge's helicopter guide estimates ten minutes of practice-range time with the right settings fixes them. This page compiles that guide's control layout, the settings that matter, and the habits that keep your passengers (and their loadouts) alive.

Why beginners roll on takeoff

WARDOGS helicopters climb on one input and tilt on a completely separate one, and beginners fire both at once: the result is a rolled takeoff answered with more tilt instead of less. There is almost no stabilization assist at the time of writing — but if you get the airframe close to a steady hover, it largely holds itself there. That is why MetaForge teaches hovering first and takeoff runs second.

The recommended control layout

The community-recommended keyboard and mouse split:

ActionInput
Climb / descendW / S
Yaw (turn)A / D
Cyclic tilt (pitch & roll)Arrow keys — or the mouse

The mouse option is the one to try first if the arrow keys feel binary: smooth tilt input approximates the finer control PC helicopter sims give you, and several guides describe the result as feeling closer to classic Battlefield flying. Whatever you choose, isolate the variable — do not change input method and learn the flight model in the same session.

Settings that matter

  1. Vehicle sensitivity lives in its own menu. An infantry-tuned sensitivity turns every small hover correction into an over-correction; lower it before you fly, not after you crash.
  2. Practice range first. Ten minutes of hover, translate and landing drills is the community's standard prescription.
  3. Pick a helicopter family and stick with it. The roster includes the MH-6/AH-6 little birds, the Z-20 Lakota and the Havoc — see the vehicle list for what each does.

Pilot habits that earn trust

  • Fly with a purpose: air passenger delivery pays very little XP, but full-squad insertions to objectives are how Pilot levels and how sieges break.
  • Deal with lock-ons by terrain, not panic — low-altitude masking beats open-sky flares, per community pilot tips (specific countermeasure details remain community knowledge, not officially documented).
  • Never carry passengers who did not choose to fly with you; a bad landing deletes their entire loadout, and Reddit's pilot threads agree trust is the real currency.
